Beatrix Potter bought Hill Top at Near Sawrey in 1905 when she was forty-seven years old.
Along with her family, she had already been a frequent visitor to the Lakes but from this point on she made the Lake District her permanent home. She is best known as the writer and illustrator of the perennially popular Peter Rabbit stories. However, she also became locally famous as a successful breeder of Herdwick sheep and also as a passionate conservationist of Lakeland heritage.
She was, perhaps first and foremost, a very accomplished artist and this skill shines through in her famous Tales. The illustrations for most of these stories were inspired by the buildings and scenery in and around her home at Near Sawrey. Sometimes she moved a little farther afield, such as the village of Hawkshead and the Newlands Valley near Derwent Water. One of her tales even went as far from home as Gloucester!
