Early Shop Counter
Many early shop counters would have been converted old chests. The top would be nailed down and the back taken out so that a shelf could be fitted inside for the shopkeeper to store goods and keep cash out of sight.

Long Shop Counter (lift up flap and opening door at end)
From mid 18th century. For use in the general store of Victorian times.  It allowed the shopkeeper to serve from behind the counter and also to get through to the front of his shop.

Box of Candles
Until the development of gas and electric lighting, candles were used extensively by both rich and poor.  They would be sold in shops by weight.  There were three main sizes - 8’s, 10’s and 12’s, meaning 8 to a pound, 10 to a pound and 12 to a pound.
